I write for those women who do not speak, for those who do not have a voice because they were so terrified, because we are taught to respect fear more than ourselves. We’ve been taught that silence would save us, but it won’t. ~Audre Lorde

“Katrina, you should write a Blog!”

These are words I heard from my sister over five years ago. Because of my love for writing, I was flattered by the thought. On the other hand, I thought of hundreds of reasons why I wasn’t going to do it. For starters, I didn’t have the time. I didn’t want the commitment. I didn’t want the responsibility. I was happy on the path I was on with the launch of my personal & professional growth and development company. I was thrilled in my role as an Assistant Professor teaching graduate students. I was good. I was really good. But, life has a way of redirecting us. It has a way of changing our intended course and bringing us full-circle.

My Full-Circle Moment

In March 2015, I began the dissertation phase of my doctoral studies at Northeastern University. With an interest in exploring the phenomenon of organizational silence and with my passion deeply rooted in the empowerment of women, my focus was on the topic, “When Silence Speaks Louder Than Words.” In my research study, I interviewed eight women who worked in organizations where organizational silence was present (Just so you know, organizational silence is a phenomenon that happens in organizations when employees withhold information, opinions, and/or ideas about issues or concerns at work).

Through the interview process, each of the women shared their deep perceptions and experiences of silence. They shared their heartfelt feelings of frustration, their feelings of powerlessness, their feelings of hopelessness, and their feelings of resentment. Their stories of silence unearthed the multiple of ways in which silence kills, the instances when silence is not golden, and the awareness that silence can speak louder than words. Their stories moved me. Their courage to share their stories catalyzed something in me. Their journeys inspired me to write – not to write more about silence, but rather to write about the power of voice!
